PARK(ing) DayPARK(ing) Day

Creating a public park takes years of planning and work. Or, you could use a quarter.

PARKing DAYRebar, A San Francisco art collective, started converting parking spaces into temporary public parks back in 2005. They discovered a loophole in the San Francisco County legal code that leaves open the possibility of occupying a metered space with something other than a car.

Today, hundreds of parks are being set up around the world for PARK(ing) DayFind one near you, or set one up yourself.

The parks may only last a few hours, but they offer a glimpse at a different use for public space and a different way to build the cities we want to live in. We make the road by walking, and we make the parks by parking.

Porter SquareUpdate: On my walk to get colored pencils and a Pink Pearl eraser, I happened to pass a local PARK(ing) Space in Porter Square, Cambridge.
